Divorce Statistics for 2012

In our society today, divorce is a very common trend among married couples. In fact, half of the married couples will divorce at some point in time according to the U.S. Census Bureau. While these numbers are so high, their studies show that these rates have actually been in the decline since the statistics of 1996, and this includes the celebrity divorces and the more recent gay divorces. What is so interesting, is that divorce is not only common here in America as we may think. We often associate our fluctuating culture and love for new and exciting things to be what leads us to divorce; however, this is the case all over the world. Many countries around the globe are in similar situations with their marriages.

When breaking down the statistics of divorce here in the U.S. we see that the average divorce rate for first time married couples is about 46%, those who enter into their second marriage are 60% and 70% of those who are in their third marriages will eventually end in a divorce. According to the Census Bureau, the highest percentage age groups of divorcees are those who are between 20 and 24 years of age at 36.6% of woman and 38.6% of men. The second highest divorce age group would be females who marry under the age of 18, they are at 27.6 %. As couples continue to grow older the likelihood of divorce gradually decreases.

The frequency of divorce here in our country is an every of one every thirteen seconds. Simply put that means daily there are 6,646 divorces each day somewhere in our country and then every week this totals out to 46,523. For the couples that do chose divorce at some point, the studies have found that the average marriage ill last at least eight years before they decided to call it quits. After that, if they choose to ever remarry at all, they tend to wait an estimated three years or so.

Fear not, studies also show that those couples who are happily married with children are 14 percent less likely to divorce than the average family. Another interesting statistic that researchers have learned is that when couples wait until they are at least 25 years of age to marry, there is a 24 percent less of a chance that the couples will end in a divorce. While many couples may believe that living together before marriage is a helpful way to be acquainted with your future spouse, studies find that the divorce likelihood increases by 40 percent for those who live together before they are married.
